Why Cloth Diaper?

It is estimated that by the age of 2 1/2, a baby will spend 22,000 hours in diapers and parents will have changed over 13,000! Most parents and unfortunately most physicians fail to realize that diapers play an important role in both the baby's environment and skin health care.

SKIN:

It is important to consider that cloth diapers are as good for your baby's skin as they are for the earth's. Cotton breathes, letting air circulate to baby's skin.  And, unlike chemical-laden disposables, cotton diapers are naturally absorbent.  Disposable diapers become much hotter, which allows for more rapid growth of bacteria. Cloth diapers cause less friction on tender skin, also reducing the likelihood of diaper rash.

ENVIRONMENT:

18 billion diapers go into landfills every year. "Disposable" is an ironic description of these diapers because there is nothing disposable about them. Disposable diapers will be in landfills for centuries. Single use diapers generate between one and two tons of garbage for every baby, and all of it goes to landfills. It takes around 80,000 pounds of plastic and over 200,000 trees a year to manufacture the disposable diapers for American babies alone.
The good news is that more and more babies today are wearing reusable cloth diapers. Disposable diapers have a tremendous negative impact on our solid waste resources.
Reusable diapers use less water and energy and generate much less waste than disposable diapers.

Convenient

Pins and plastic pants?  Swirling in the toilet? No Way! Velcro closures and hi-tech, eco-friendly fabrics have replaced vintage pins and plastic pants. Flushable liners can be purchased for easy clean up on the go - no rinsing or dunking in the toilet.

Economical

You can expect to spend anywhere from $2000-2500 on single-use diapers from beginning to end.  But a great cloth diaper system for 2 1/2 years of diapering can cost as little as $300! That is phenomenal savings. Re-use the same system for siblings and let the savings add up!

Comfortable

Most importantly, there is nothing like the feel of a soft, clean cloth diaper against your baby's skin! We change our cloth diapered babies more often - and that's healthy. With cloth diapers there tends to be more air circulation, and less build-up of temperature. Diaper rash is greatly reduced in cloth-diapered babies.
